3 out of 5 stars Good voice, good songs, but over-produced sound   July 25, 2009

You should buy Laswell earlier CD "Through Toledo" (it has excellent songs with excellent sound quality)instead of this new CD. This CD you need to hear repeatedly in order to start to like it. This CD has the recognizable selections "Sweet Dream", "And Then You", and 10 other songs that are good composition but unfortuhately almost sound alike. In these 10 songs, Laswell nice vocalization is destroyed by the monotonous heavenly-sounding backup voices/chorouses whose arrangement are almost the same for all songs. The cosmic-sounding instrumentations for most songs are also monotonous as they sound the same. Might be that the CD production is done by using just two persons' ideas. There is no variation in most songs such that if you hear one song, you hear all songs already. This was not the case of the previous Laswell's "Through Toledo", which is one of the best CD you can hear. To enjoy Laswell excellent vocals and nice songs, I recommend you buy and enjoy Laswell's previous CD. instead.

Excellent recording. I'm enjoying immensely the songwriting and musicianship. Real enjoyable vocals. (Jonathan Richman if he was raised in the midwest?) The rhythms are moving; the beat has drive. I have my tickets for the Saint Louis show!

Ok. So.

Greg Laswell is amazing-ness. His last record blew me away and was on repeat for about 2 months. This album delivers the same response but at a slightly higher level. His lyrics just know how to describe exactly what you can't and his harmonies hook you into a more beautiful world.

I can't believe they are selling "genius" for $1.99. It's like a gift for the summer. "Sorry you lost your job, but here...now you have more time to listen to beauty at the beach."

I generally like more upbeat music. But this album, and his first, are so haunting and wonderful. I just love them. Exquisite. Thank you, Greg, please keep making music. Your albums are such gems in my massive music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but a Bit Over-produced   April 28, 2009

Greg Laswell is a great artist and songwriter, but some tracks have vocals which are over-produced. "Comes and Goes" starts off remarkable, but the chorus dilutes the song's power with its almost-new-age vocals. "How the Day Sounds" is his masterpiece, and Greg Laswell rocks in concert!!
